picture size

Sadly this will probably be first of many questions from me as I am an old dinosaur when it comes to computers. I am confused about size of photos needed. Says 10mb or 10MB in two different places. My full size pics are 1.5MB so I do not understand. I am used to getting required size in pixels , such as maximum 800 horizontal, or 600X400

Hi! The 10 mb limit is just to keep image storage managable.
You will be able to upload your pictures just fine if they are 1.5 mb.

The mb here stands for megabytes, I'm not sure if there's a difference between the capitalized version and the lower case version, if there is I didn't know!
I will go though the mentions of the upload limit and update the formatting to be the same everywhere next update.

We do not limit the size in pixels, as we can just scale the image to fit on the site.

Long story short, doesn't look like you have to worry about your images, if they do not fit the requirements you will be notified automatically.

As a mini shower and fellow dinosaur ;-) I would have this *advice* regarding digital image size: 800 pixel as your longest side is a good standard. If your images are too large, EVERY fleck, spot, dust speck, etc on your horse can be visible. High resolution isn't always our friend!

True that! To look over my pics I cast them to our 72" television - all I could do was GASP! Haha they were NOT meant to be seen that large! :D

I don't quite understand the 10 MB thing either, as most (if not all) online photo shows specify sizes in pixels, not megabytes.
I generally resize my images to be around 1200(horizontal) x 800 pixels (sometimes larger @ 1800 x 1200 pixels)
This provides a good view of the model to judges, without being overly large.
I'm on a 17" laptop, so these sizes make it a breeze for judging.

800 pixels is too small to judge, IMO-- this was probably established when online photo showing was in its infancy and show hosts set size limits to around 800 pixels or so, to keep bandwidth down. This is no longer the case, as photography has really come of age, with more and more image-hosting sites offering greater bandwidth for image uploads.

By specifying in MB instead of pixel dimensions, it allows people not to have to find image resizing programs to make sure their images are in the exact dimensions required. This can be very difficult for some people, especially those that can only be on mobile and don't have easy access to image editors. One of the biggest issues I've seen in photo shows is people have entries DQ'd or deleted simply because they weren't within specific pixel dimensions when they probably had no idea that they weren't in the first place.

This way, we can still make sure people are keeping images within a reasonable file size so our servers aren't overloaded with images that take up tons of space (some raw camera images can be multiple gigabytes in size), since server space for thousands of photos is the most expensive part of hosting this site, but not have people having to spend hours resizing images they've already taken that aren't quite within a different show's size requirements.

With the way the judging system works, the images are made the same size regardless - if they are huge, they'll be automatically sized down when viewing, so it really doesn't make much of a difference in the end. Just a way to take away an extra step for showers to make things easier :) Hope this explains it a bit more!
