Photo refs in alt images. The Przewalski's horse (Equus ferus przewalskii) is a genetically distinct species or subspecies (presently debated) of wild horse. Early sequencing studies of DNA revealed several genetic characteristics of Przewalski's horse that differ from what is seen in modern domestic horses, indicating neither is ancestor of the other, and supporting the status of Przewalski horses as a remnant wild population not derived from modern domestic horses. The Przewalski's horse is distinctly primitive in appearance and conformation. They are small (typically not reaching higher than 14hh), stocky and hardy. They are generally pangare dun in colour, and may or may not show barring consistent with dun. Their front hooves are significantly longer than their back hooves and have thicker soles than domesticated horses. Their profile is straight with a large head and thick neck. Their mane is zebra-like and erect with no forelock.
