Despite their widespread popularity and use in years past and favor with the royal family, the breed is critically endangered today. They are always Bay in color - red bay being the most desirable - and the only white permitted is on the face. They can occasionally have red legs, but this is not desired. They typically stand between 16 and 16.2 hands. They have large heads, short, strong legs, and extremely muscular shoulders.
