- The Choctaw Horse is a small, sturdy, intelligent horse directly descending from horses brought to America by DeSoto in the 1500s. These hardy horses average between 13.2 and 14.2hh and come in most colors, although pinto is most common). These were the ponies of the Choctaw Nation and, like the people of the Choctaw Nation, they became nearly extinct during the forced relocation known as the Trail of Tears. Today, there are roughly 200 Choctaw Horses in existence, mostly belonging to a small group of conservationists dedicated to preserving the breed.
