- REF PHOTOS IN ALT PICS. Originating from the harsh landscape of Connemara, Ireland, the Connemara Pony is a hardy British breed. Their native stock, potentially brought to Ireland by the Vikings, was bred with Andalusians by the Spanish Armada in the 1500s, producing a tough pony with refined Spanish conformation. Bred and developed for their strength, the Connemara should have a strong back, loins and hindquarters with a deep, broad rib cage. The shoulders are well laid-back. The head should be well-set onto the neck with the crest not over-developed. The recognised colours of the Connemara pony are grey, bay, brown, dun, black, chestnut, roan, palomino, buckskin and cream. They are a compact, well-balanced riding-type pony, used today primarily for sports.
