Link The Virginia Highlander is a gaited horse breed first developed in 1960 by William Pugh. Pugh wanted a small riding horse fit for beginners and was inspired by a chestnut stallion named Pogo, crossbred between an Arabian/TWH dam and what was thought to be a Welsh pony sire. Pogo was naturally gaited and good tempered. Pugh began his own breeding program by crossing Pogo and his descendants out to Arabians, TWHs, Morgans, ASBs, Hackney ponies and Welsh ponies. Horses that matched Pugh's desired criteria for conformation, disposition and gait were further bred. In the 1990s, the Virginia Highlander Horse Association was established. By 2004 there were over 130 Virginia Highlanders registered outside of the foundation stock.
