The head of a shire should be long and lean, neither large nor small with a long neck in proportion to the body. A large jaw bone should be avoided. They should have large, well set and docile expression eyes. The nose should have a slight roman type to it as well as thin and wide nostrils. The ears are long, sharp, lean and sensitive. The neck should be long, slightly arched and well set on to give the horse a commanding appearance. The back should be short, strong, and muscular and should not be dipped or roached. Loins should stand well up, denoting food constitution and should not be flat. The chest should be wide with legs well under the body and well enveloped in muscle. Hind quarters are long and sweeping, wide and full of muscle and should be well let down towards the thighs. There should not be too much hair and should be fine, straight and silky. Accepted colors are black, brown, bay, and grey while geldings and mares can also come in chestnut and roan.
