How to Designate a Custom Breyer Factory Resin?
Zialander
Thursday, May 20, 2021 8:29 PMI'm fairly new here, and I've run into an issue with a Breyer Factory Resin (Chesterfield is the resin run name) that is also a custom piece. Right now, I have him identified as a Custom Plastic because he's not an Original Finish Resin or an Artist's Resin and there's no other category that fits him, but I've hesitated to enter him in any shows because "Custom Plastic" isn't really correct.
Could I get some help with how I should properly classify him in the database?
Thanks so much!

Friday, May 21, 2021 11:27 AMHi & welcome to the OMHPS forum!
I've owned a few of these Breyer porcelains & resins over the years (Ballyduff, Leandro, stablemate china/porcelains, etc).
Depending on the material/composition, I tend to slot them into OF China (porcelain), or OF Commercial Resin (OF Resin).
The Ballyduff model is definitely a china/bisque porcelain type of material, so I tend to show him (and others like it) in the OF China division.
Others, like the Leandro (and your Chesterfield) is a resin/compound mix-- heavier than porcelain/china, so I tend to slot these into OF Resin category (similar in make/composition to the Black Horse Ranch, American Artist, Sandicast Horses, Starlite Creations, North Lights etc. All these I consider to be commercial release resins-- and I would show them under ' OF RESIN '
Hope that helps!

Friday, May 21, 2021 11:49 PMHi Appaloosa,
Thanks for your response. It does help except -- he's had minor body customization (slight change to the tail) and custom paint, so I don't think I can slot him as an OF Resin, or even OF China. I'm not sure if you're involved with management of the site or not, but I was wondering if maybe a Custom Resin category could be created?
Thank you.

Saturday, May 22, 2021 4:04 AMHi Zialander, I'll go ahead and add a Custom Factory Resin make as I agree it wouldn't fit under any OF category. :) You should be able to list your model as such now.

Saturday, May 22, 2021 10:36 AM@Zialander: FWIW, your Chesterfield had "minor body customization (slight change to the tail)" and a "custom paint" job-- that means his original factory finish has been altered (i.e. customized)-- Personally, I consider this to be a CM.
I think most shows in North America (others can correct me if I'm wrong) would slot these type customs all under the umbrella of a CM division.
Any alteration to the original factory finish (no matter how minor) means the model has been customized-- whether it be a slight resculpt, repainted, etc. I know of one shower who had the Breyer porcelain/resin 3-day Event/X-country jumper "Courage"-- she repainted over the US flag to a Canadian one. It was a very minor customization, but considered a CM nevertheless.
Cheers!

Sunday, May 30, 2021 8:58 PMThanks, Appaloosa. I think the one show I entered him in on this site I did submit him as a CM. He's been disqualified a couple of times in the past for being in that category though. Hopefully he'll be all set now.

Tuesday, January 18, 2022 12:33 PMThis is so helpful. I am new to all of this and am trying to upload one of my horses. He is a CM Premier Club Breyer “Rhian” that has been customized to an Appaloosa pony stallion, with added resin mane/tail and tucked head and tail. He has also been painted with an airbrush, with hand painted details. I am at a loss and haven’t uploaded him as a result.

Tuesday, January 18, 2022 4:24 PMTwirlingBay - I would consider that a Custom Plastic. According to Breyer's own rules for their shows, it still counts as a Breyer Custom even if it has resin/non-Breyer parts, as long as those parts don't make up more than 25% of the model. I'd say just a resin mane and tail counts as under that percent, and any further customization (like tucking the head) still puts it as CM Plastic :)

Tuesday, February 1, 2022 4:29 PMCatching up on this thread, as Zialander asked a very interesting question. True "OF factory" resins seem to still be *just* uncommon enough, they're often lumped in with OF Chinas, while CMs on factory resins are still a bit rare, and often just left out in the cold. Looking at the rules for one club I show with, I found OF resins and CM resins put to show in the same division.
I have a sizeable North Light show string, so I'm even more interested in this topic. I haven't shown my NL herd in years now, but back when I did, my guys were always grouped with all the factory produced clinkys: china and porcelain. Nobody knew what else to do with cold-cast resin models, and Breyer porcelain/resin runs were just getting started. As far as I know, North Lights are still unusual in being an entire line of factory produced cold-cast resin equines (Stonecritters, Sandicast, and similar notwithstanding), except maybe for Copperfox?? And the long discontinued Black Horse Ranch resin line.
And now there's custom plastic Breyers with resin parts. How cool is that? We've come a long way! :-D
