More breeds suggestions

Thursday, April 8, 2021 8:29 AM

Hi! I don't know if a special topic for suggesting new breeds (or species in this case) already exists, so I decided to start this one. I would like to suggest adding 3 species of zebras, instead of just generic zebra. Three known species of zebras are Plains zebra (Equus quagga), Grévy's zebra (Equus grevyi), and Mountain zebra (Equus zebra). Additionally, Plains zebra has 6 subspecies and Mountain zebra 2, but maybe that would be too detailed and probably unnecessary? But for example, quagga (now extinct but quite popular in the model horse hobby) is considered a subspecies of Plains zebra.

I also couldn't find the Silesian horse on the list :) I think it should probably go to (heavy) warmbloods or carriage horses.

I think this may be splitting hairs.😉

I've run into this dilemma before with other breeds-- for example, the North American Curly Horse has 3 different sub-types: standard, pony type and draft type.

I think the best solution for Zebra sub-types, (and any other breed with diff types) would be for the owner/entrant to use the DESCRIPTION field to provide as much specifics as possible (ie: Grévy Zebra stallion). You could also use the 'reference' field for uploading ref images, or provide ref link.

I see your point, and I would say, sure probably no need to separate the subspecies (even though quagga is already on the list and it's just a subspecies of Plains zebra). But the 3 zebras are not different breeds or types but species. It's not at all like subtypes of one breed. They are almost as different from each other as tiger vs lion.

I think the main three species of zebra would be fine additions to the list, being as they are very different and not just different types of a single breed. The subspecies do fit better in the description, IMO, since they are more of that kind of thing.

I will also add the Silesian :)
