Ideally, a good head study photo shows just the head, a clear eye reflecting the light (you should be able to see the outline ridge of the far eye as well), both ears, a clean throatlatch, clear & defined nostrils, lips and muzzle area, and maybe a bit of the neck. Background should be as uncluttered as possible, or blurred so that only the horse's head is in focus.
