References
Photo references in alt images. The Hokkaido Pony is a rare and endangered breed of equine that originates from the northernmost island of Japan, Hokkaido. It is a small-sized horse that is known for its hardiness, intelligence, and versatility. There are approximately 3,000 Hokkaido Ponies left in Japan, many of which roam freely as part-feral horses. They are used for trail riding, as pack horses and even under harness - many are naturally gaited and are able to ‘pace’. Hokkaido Ponies have a distinctive straight profile with large nostrils and a neat, tapered muzzle. The body is compact and muscular with a thick mane, tail and coat. Their withers and shoulders are not particularly well-defined, but they have light, slender and powerful legs. They are strong through their quarters and hind-legs and have a well-set tail. Their hooves are rounded and strong.
