- Waler named for the area from which in originates, the Australian Waler is a colonial age, all around breed known for its exceptional hardiness. It was especially valued and prized during war times because of its ability to out perform heavier European hunters. The Waler was created from Thoroughbred, Cape Horses, Barbs, Cleveland Bays, Arabians, native British ponies, and draft horses. There are four types: pony, light, medium, and heavy. Their height ranges from 13 to 17 hands. They are typically bay, chestnut, or black but may also be buckskin, palomino, or flaxen chestnut. They are a very robust breed, with long clean legs, strong hindquarters, well formed hocks, well sprung ribs, a deep chest, and sloping shoulders.
