- Australian Riding Pony Like all Australian breeds of equine, the Australian Riding pony was created through cross breeding of imported horses. The development of the breed began in the early 1800s, with a stud book being established in the early 1900s. The breed was created with welsh ponies, Connemaras, Exmoor, Hackney ponies, Timore ponies, thoroughbreds, a small number of Arabians, and more. The most common color is gray, but they can be any color. standing between 11 and 14 hands, the Australian Riding pony shows the influence of the Welsh pony prominently. They have small alert ears, big bold eyes, dished faces, arched, well set necks, rounded hindquarters, well set tails, and well sprung ribs.
