See alt images for ref. The exceptionally rare 'Bloody Shoulder', steeped in legend and mystery, is a marking that shows most often in Crabbet Arabian Stud-line and has been prized by horsemen for hundreds of years. One of the first recorded incidences of this marking in Crabbet-line Arabians was the stallion Greylight (left), with a contemporary example showing in champion stallion WH Justice (centre and right). Genetic testing shows us that the 'blood mark' is the result of a chestnut or bay base coat on a greyed or greying horse developing 'flea bite’-type markings in a concentrated area - usually on the neck or flank. These areas usually do not grey out over the lifetime of the horse. They are usually asymmetrical markings and may occur on one or both sides of the horse.
