- The Hackney Pony The hackney pony should stand between 12.2 and 14 hands in maturity, featuring distinct pony characteristics like a compact frame and alert and neat ears. Forelegs should feature long and well developed forearms and long and light pastern bones to provide the bouncy step distinctive of the breed and should appear to be attached just below the shoulder. Front hooves should form a 50 degree angle from the top of the hoof to the toe while the back hooves feature a more upright angle. A strong throat is necessary to allow proper breathing when bridled. They should feature a high held neck and withers, with a confidently held head. The hindquarters and shoulders should be well muscled without appearing bulky. The tail is to be well carried and may or may not be docked.
