Brindle Genetics According to the Veterinary Genetics Lab at UC Davis, the brindle gene in horses is a semi dominant, X-chromosome linked trait, with the associated allele referred to as Brindle1 or BR1. Horses with the correct genotype for expressing brindle traits are characterized by a vertical striping pattern of pigment on the coat along the sides, with a difference in texture between the pigmented hairs and the rest of the coat. As an X-linked trait, the semi dominance of the BR1 gene will cause a mare with the genotype of BRI/N (N = the absence of the BR1 gene) to show the brindle pattern, while mares with two copies of the BR1 gene do not. Males either have the BR1 gene or they do not. Contrastingly, the brindle like patterns that can occur as a result of chimerism are not heritable. Source: Link
