- See alt pics for ref images. “At one time the leopard pattern was present in the population, but it is assumed that both the gene for appaloosa coloring (Lp) and for the leopard pattern (Patn1) have been lost. It would be possible for the basic appaloosa color to go unnoticed in a breed where greying and skin depigmentation are common. Patterning genes (including Patn1) are not visible without the basic appaloosa gene, so they may have been preserved in the population.
