References
Nokota Like mustangs, the Nokota Horse is a feral breed that resulted from the breeding of Spanish horses, the horses of ranchers, the horses of Native Americans, thoroughbreds, and other animals that were released or escaped into the wild. They roam the Badlands of North Dakota. Also like the mustang, ranchers attempted to wipe them out in order to create more grazing land for cattle. The Nokota Horse only survived because of the creation of the Theodore Roosevelt national Park in the 1940s. A few bands of the horses were accidentally trapped inside the park and were safe from being hunted. They are a hearty, tough horse that has resulted from natural selection. They have prominent Withers, a sloped croup and low set tail, stand between 14 and 17 hands, and often have an ambling gait. They are usually blue roan but can also be black, gray, and sometimes red roan, Bay, Chestnut, done, grella, and Palomino with overo and sabino occasionally seen.
