The New Forest pony is a recognised native breed of the British Isles. Height varies from around 12 to 14.2 hands; ponies of all heights should be of riding type, workmanlike, and strong in conformation, with a sloping shoulder and powerful hindquarters; the body should be deep, and the legs straight with strong, flat bone, and hard, rounded hooves.
The New Forest Pony Breeding and Cattle Society stipulates that three genetic solid base colours, (bay/brown, black and chestnut) are found in the breed. The roan gene is found in the breed and ponies should be described as bay roan, chestnut roan, or blue roan. White markings on the face and below the hock on the legs are acceptable.
