- Ardennes The Ardennes is one of the oldest breeds of draft horse in the world and dates back to ancient Rome. They were used for cavalry mounts and pulling artillery in the past and were the favorite breed of Julius Caesar and Napoleon. Nowadays they are used for draft work, meat, and competitive driving. They have a large head, a straight or slightly convex profile, short, sturdy legs, a short back, a compact build, and feathered fetlocks. They are usually bay or roan but can also be chestnut, gray, and Palomino.
