(Left: A grulla blanket Appaloosa filly.) According to the The Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC), the Appaloosa should be of medium stock build and conformation: a short, thick body, broad shoulders and a long, steady gait, making them a pleasure to ride. Appaloosas may be solid or spotted coloured, but should have mottled skin and white sclera. They may have brown or blue eyes. Grulla (or blue dun) is a permitted base colour for appaloosas.
