- The Cerbat, also known as Spanish Barb or Spanish Mustang, is found in the Cerbat Mountains near Kingman, Arizona. This endangered group is considered the purest of the feral Spanish horses. Cerbats are believed to be descended from horses used by Conquistadores during the early explorations of the Southwest and blood typing has confirmed the markers of Spanish blood. Cerbats are long remembered among the local Native peoples and have a known history of purity on their present range since the 1860's. Descendants from the original group of horses captured by Mustanger Ira Wakefield have made significant impacts on today's Colonial Spanish Horse and have been used to supplement the feral population. Cerbats are a somewhat heavier old Spanish type and are roan, bay, chestnut and rarely black, gray or dun (according to BLM). The Cerbat (along with the Wilbur-Cruce Mission Horse) represent The Colonial Spanish Horse as Arizona’s Heritage Horse.
