- Reference photos in alt pics. Bred and developed for their strength, the Connemara should have a strong back, loins and hindquarters with a deep, broad rib cage. The shoulders are well laid-back. The head should be well-set onto the neck with the crest not over-developed. They are a compact, well-balanced riding-type pony. The recognised colours of the Connemara pony are grey, bay, brown, dun, black, chestnut, roan (left), palomino, buckskin and cream. Some rare cases, ‘reverse dapple roaning’ has been known to occur. Though it is not completely clear what causes these ‘reverse dapples’, ponies with this pattern are usually homozygous for black or bay genes and heterozygous for Agouti ‘roan’, and grey out over their lifetimes. Reverse dapples are progressive and can change considerably over a pony’s life. Pictured right is an example of this colour in a Welsh pony.
