It’s unusual for a horse to have lived in almost total obscurity for centuries, but that’s the story of the Sorraia horse. Researchers know that this breed originated on the Iberian peninsula, but studies are ongoing to determine the horse’s DNA. Sorraia horses have very distinct primitive markings that make them easily recognisable. It’s common to see a black dorsal stripe, black tips on the ears, horizontal leg stripes, and a dark muzzle against a dun or grullo (grey) coat with the Sorraia.
