Icelandic Pony x Connemara. Ref pics in alt images. (Left:) The Icelandic Horse (or pony) is a hardy breed of small pony-type horse native to Iceland. While they are most often referred to colloquially as 'horses', they were developed from the pony stock taken to Iceland from Norse settlers in the 9th and 10th centuries. They can be almost any colour, but silver bay, as demonstrated by the picture above, is particularly common in the breed. (Right:) Bred for their strength, the Connemara should have a strong back, loins and hindquarters with a deep, broad rib cage. The shoulders are well laid-back. The head should be well-set onto the neck with the crest not over-developed. They are a compact, well-balanced riding-type pony, used today primarily for sports. Despite their short stature, they have been known to compete in FEI levels of showjumping, eventing and dressage.
