The kelpie
The kelpie, or water kelpie, is a shape-shifting water spirit said to inhabit the lochs and pools of Scotland. It is a Celtic legend; however, analogues exist in other cultures. It was sometimes seen as a benevolent prankster that would make fleeting appearances to travelers, but never fully reveal itself. Typically however, it had far more malicious intent. It was said to present it self to people as an enchantingly beautiful black horse that would compel you to mount it. Once mounted on it’s back, people became stuck. Only then would it reveal it’s true form - Red eyes, fangs, and a greenish coating of slime and algae over it’s black body - and Wood Gallup into the water, drowning the person stuck to its back.
