Indian Summer

Sergei Akhal-Teke stallion sculpt by Kitty Cantrell customized by Cindy Williams painted to bay Appaloosa by Cindi Wyatt The Nez Perce Horse is a cross between the Akhal-Teke and the Appaloosa. This breed of spotted horses belonged to the Nez Perce tribe of Idaho (and hence the name). The people of this tribe called their horse Ma’amin, The Nez Perces are often “gaited”, having a smooth but fast running walk, and excelled in long rides, jumping, and endurance race competitions.

References
The Nez Perce horse is derived from old-line Appaloosa (the Wallowa herd) and the Central Asian horse breed Akhal-Teke. A typical Nez Perce horse is buckskin or palomino. Mottled skin, blanket and/or spotting are common features, as expected in a breed derived so heavily from appaloosas. Compared to a modern-day appaloosa, the Nez Perce tend to be longer and leaner, with more narrow shoulders. It gives the impression of being a “lean runner” rather than a sturdy farm horse with Quarter Horse input.
