- Welsh Pony Section B First mentioned in history by Julius Caesar himself, who praised their speed, docility, and excellence as a riding mount, the modern Welsh Pony is a descendant of the ancient Celtic ponies who crossed a land bridge to the British Isles around 4,000 BC. A product of their environment, these ponies developed their renowned surefootedness, agility, and hardiness in the hills and valleys of Wales. An extremely versatile breed, the Welsh Pony is separated into four subsections, A & D for the ponies and C & D for cob type ponies and cobs. A Welsh Pony, Section B must exceed 12.2 hh but not reach over 14.2 hh. These ponies may come in any color and have small, refined heads with long, sloping shoulders, square set limbs with dense hooves, deep heart girths with well-spring ribs, and long, but well-muscled hindquarters.
