References
See alt pics for refs. The model pictured is a young Icelandic stallion (approximately two years old), whose conformation is similar to the young animals in the photos above. The Icelandic Horse is a small, hardy breed native to Iceland. They have measurably more 'cylindrical' skulls than many other horse breeds, making their jowls and cheeks less pronounced. Their noses are often convex due to their large nasal cavities which has helped them adapt to a cold climate - inhaled air can be warmed in these large cavities before reaching the lungs, preventing core body temperature from dropping. Some Icelandic Horses may show somewhat enlarged knees and joints due to the extreme grazing conditions of native Iceland, with long winters and booms of summer grass when daylight is near-constant. They are often deliberately kept lean so that their natural 'tölting' gait is allowed to flow without a large belly getting in the way.
