References
Tenzai is a purebred Thoroughbred with White Spotted coloration very similar to the Japanese racing sensation, Buchiko. (See reference photos of Buchiko). The predominantly white coloring is courtesy of a specific gene mutation, the KIT gene, which plays an important role in color during embryonic development, causing an absence of melanocytes in depigmented skin areas. This Thoroughbred coloration probably comes via Kentucky Derby winner Sunday Silence, whose daughter, Shirayukihime, is Buchiko’s dam. The dam has passed on her white coloring to all of her foals, except one. Only Buchiko and full sister Marble Cake have the chestnut spotted markings on their white coats.
