- The Murgese is an Italian horse breed. It is named after its area of origin, the plateau of Le Murge in southern Italy. Murgeses usually stand between 150 and 168 centimetres (14.3 and 16.2 hands) at the withers. The only color to be accepted is black, without any head or leg markings. The head has a straight or slightly convex profile (roman nose) and a broad forehead. The neck is sturdy and broad at the base and mane is always long and wavy. The hooves are black and extremely hard, a feature for which the breed is famous.
