References: See alt pics for colour ref. A blood-mark is a type of coat somatic mutation found only in flea-bitten grey horses, most commonly occurring in Arabians and Thoroughbreds. The area on the horse that constitutes the blood mark does not grey out evenly with the rest of the horse and may remain the base colour of the horse. Commonly, the blood mark areas are red (chestnut) which gives the marking its name, but other colours may occur, including bay, black and a darker grey.
