"Tovero" is the term given to the expression of both the tobiano and overo genes. "Overo" is considered an umbrella term for a number of patterns including frame, sabino, white spotting and splash. For this model it is the sabino gene (SB1) present alongside tobiano (TO) resulting in the sabino-like patches across the body and the telltale tovero "shield" marking on the head. The base colour is black yet the presence of SB1 results in the colouration of the markings appearing almost roan-like.
