Mystifier

Dapple bay Thoroughbred mare with dominant white (*sabino-like) patterning. Kittydidit resin by Kitty Cantrell, finished by Kathleen Kirch Lindley aka Grey Horse Studios. Only approximately 200 of the Kittydidit resin were produced. (*Thoroughbreds do not actually carry the sabino gene though that is the common terminology. The sabino pattern in Thoroughbreds is usually the result of White Spotting also known as Dominant White.)

White Spotting (W22) in Thoroughbreds White spotting (also known as dominant white) is one of several known depigmentation phenotypes in Thoroughbred horses. It is the result of a spontaneous mutation of the KIT-gene which is why white foals tend to be a surprise when born to solid parents. The pattern is likely as old the breed itself. For a long time, the sabino-like patterning of loudly marked white spotted Thoroughbreds was thought to be the result of the sabino allele (Sb1), but we now know that Sb1 has not been found in Thoroughbreds. White spotted patterns are variable ranging from minimal "Sabino-like spotting" to all-white phenotypes. Eye color is typically brown. The photo examples are of a white spotted (dominant white) bay Thoroughbred, and bay eventer white spotted Puchi's Rambo.
