- The Morgan is one of the earliest horse breeds developed in the United States. Compact and refined in build, the Morgan has strong legs, and an expressive head. The back is short, and hindquarters are strongly muscled. Morgans range from 14.1 to 15.2 hands (145 to 157 cm) The Morgan breed is known for its versatility, and is used for a number of English and Western events. Registered Morgans come in a variety of colors although they are most commonly bay, black, and chestnut. Less common colors include roan, dun, cream dilutions and several pinto variations.
