- Breton Draft Horse Originating in the province of Brittany in Northwestern France, the Breton Draft horse is a heavy draft breed developed for agricultural work and pulling. Standing at 15 to 16hh on average, this breed is compact and heavily muscled with short, strong necks and backs, long, muscular shoulders, and feathered, heavily muscled legs of modest height. These horses are almost always chestnut or chestnut roan in color, often featuring luxuriously full flaxen manes and tails, but occasionally may be found in bay or bay roan. Used even today for draft work on small farms and for gathering seaweed in costal areas, the Breton Draft is the most popular draft breed in France and has been widely exported across the globe.
