References: (Photo ref in alt images.) The Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) was created in 1938 as a breed registry. According to the ApHC, the Appaloosa should be of medium stock build and conformation: a short, thick body, broad shoulders and a long, steady gait, making them a pleasure to ride. Appaloosas may be solid or spotted coloured, but should have mottled skin and white sclera. They may have brown or blue eyes. Varnish roan appaloosas have an uneven roaning pattern that increases with age. The speed at which the roaning increases varies from horse to horse. Usually a foal is born with some sort of spotting pattern, but the gradual roaning eventually overtakes this pattern. By adulthood, a horse will have more white hairs than dark hairs, dark hairs usually more dominant around the face and knees.
