References
The American Quarter Horse originated in Colonial America as far back as the 1600s with the breed registry, American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA), starting in 1940. Bred from the Spanish Barb, English stock horses, Thoroughbred, and Mustang, the breed is named for its unmatched speed in races of a quarter mile or less. Today, Quarter Horses can be found competing in both English and Western disciplines in addition to their racing heritage. There are 17 solid coat colors recognized by the AQHA registry, including palomino. American Paint Horse Association-registered horses with dual-registered parents can register with the AQHA, resulting in some Quarter Horses exhibiting atypical white markings.
