Clarification on what counts as "Decorator" - Vintage Breyer colors

Sunday, March 7, 2021 7:51 PM

Hi all!

So when I was first uploading last night, I didn't realize there was a "decorator" option under the breed menu. Will have to go back and fix a bunch of them when things are less buggy (I keep getting an error when trying to submit edits). Anyway, I have a few horses that can sometimes go either way in terms of being classified as "realistic" or "unrealistic", so I'd like to ask about those before I go and edit stuff.

Vintage Charcoal, and Vintage Style Red Roan are two colors that tend to toe the line on whether they are considered to be decos or not. Some see them as realistic because that's they way Breyer intended them to be way back when, others call them unrealistic because they believe the colors aren't really that close to approximating real horse colors. Vintage Smoke and Alabaster can sometimes fall into this category as well, but Alabaster is generally more acceptable as a real horse color.

It doesn't bother me in particular whether they are viewed one way or the other, I will go with whatever the mods/owners prefer, I just want to make sure I know whether to put their assigned breed into that menu or decorator. Thanks!!

Hey there!

The edit bug should be fixed now - it was causing a bit of grief but has since been repaired :) So feel free to go edit!

I'd say that's entirely up to you, and the host of whatever show you happen to be showing the horse in. Since they can be considered a bit of both - especially colors like vintage red roan - I'd leave it up to you whether you'd like to give that particular horse a whirl in a breed class or put it down as a decorator. You can always change this later (now that edit is working properly!) if the horse isn't placing as one or the other, or if you have been showing it as a breed but a different show host declares it to be a decorator and you'd like to enter that show.

For the Welcome To OMHPS show, since I'm judging OF, I will go ahead and say you can try them as a breed if you'd prefer to. Charcoal is somewhat iffy for breed, but I've seen people pull them off with the right documentation.

You could always put a breed for the primary breed, and "Decorator" as a crossbreed, or vice versa, to clarify it as kind of both, too! Then you just have to choose what class you'd like them in.
