Criollo The Criollo Horse is rather like the mustang of South America. They are known for being long-lived, intelligent, hearty animals able to thrive in harsh conditions for long periods of time. Aim Tschiffely famously rode two Criollo geldings named Mancha and Gato all the way from Buenos Aires to New York City over the course of three years. The geldings were 15 and 16 years old at the start of the journey and both lived to be over 40 years old. The Criollo is treasured by the people of Argentina as a workhorse for moving cattle and reliably working the ranches under the harshest of conditions. The Criollo has a wide forehead, small muzzle, straight or convex profile, arched neck, deep chest, low set tail, and a thick mane and tail. They are small, typically standing between 13.3 and 14.3 hands. They come in a rainbow of colors, including dun, brown, black, grella, Chestnut, flaxen Chestnut, Bay, Palomino, buckskin, blue roan, strawberry roan, gray, and occasionally pinto.
